KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- An East Forsyth Middle School student and her faithful companion are making history.

Student Maggie Moore's diabetes alert dog Sugar is the first service dog in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

Moore, who has battled type 1 diabetes since she was three years old, used to have a caretaker who attended school with her. Now, Sugar does the job -- and does it well.

"It's nice to know I have her here with me," Moore said.
