ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. -- A Virginia man has been charged with driving while impaired and other charges after a passenger died in an Alamance County crash, according to a Highway Patrol news release.

The news release says that at 10:22 p.m. on Friday, Highway Patrol responded to a crash that happened on Union Ridge Road near Darrell Davis Road.

Earnest Leon Jones, 42, of Norfolk, was going north in a 2004 Ford when he veered off of the road, hit a utility pole and the vehicle overturned, Highway Patrol says.

They also say Jones had minor injuries, but the two  adult passengers in the front and back right of the vehicle were taken to Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The release says Eric Steven Morton, 48, of Norfolk, died as a result of the crash. He was the back left passenger.

Highway Patrol says it was determined that Jones was impaired. He was arrested and his blood alcohol concentration was measured as 0.08.

Jones was charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and failure to wear a seatbelt.

His first court appearance was scheduled for Monday and his bond was set at $25,000.

He is currently in the Alamance County jail.
