HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Excitement is building for the new baseball stadium in downtown High Point. It’s on track to be completed in March and the first pitch for the High Point Rockers will go out in April.
“We’ve been viewed forever as a furniture market town, kind of a one-trick pony,” Mayor Jay Wagner said.
There have been previous efforts to create a more bustling downtown, like the City Project, but this time is different.
“For the first time we have our city, our elected leadership, our business community, our philanthropy community and the university all pulling in the same direction at the same time,” Wagner said.
The $35 million multi-use baseball stadium will be the centerpiece. There will be a children’s museum, events center, a 120-unit apartment building and a 120-room hotel.
The developer says there are already possible tenants for the office buildings that will be to next to the stadium and restaurants are already scoping the new scene.
“What we’re creating here is an urban style of living, an urban style of entertaining yourself that we don’t currently have in High Point,” Wagner said.
“My hope is that we’re finally making a step in the right direction and we’re able to hold onto businesses and keep them here and make it a fun place to live,” Debbie Maier said.
In the 20 years since Maier opened DeBeen Espresso in High Point. Maier says she’s seen a lot of businesses open and close.
She’s seriously considering opening a place in the new downtown to do coffee, organic foods and vegan baked goods.
“In that area there’s a lot of businesses downtown. There’s banks and offices, and likewise with the furniture market. So, I think it’s going to be an area that will attract a lot of different customers than what we currently have here.”
“I’m excited for there to be new stuff to do,” Allie Amick said.
Amick lives near Thomasville, and right now, if she and her family want to do anything fun, they drive to Greensboro or Winston-Salem.
“I have an 18-month-old, so not having to travel to another city to find entertainment will be really good for my family. Having stuff we can take her to will be a lot of fun,” Amick said.
The developer expects they’ll name several tenants by the fall.
