BOISE, Idaho — Gonzaga defeated the University of North Carolina at Greensboro men’s basketball team on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Gonzaga, a four seed, was favored over the No. 13-seed Spartans.

This was UNCG’s first appearance in the tournament since 2001.

Local Fans FOX8 spoke with after the loss say they are still proud of the team’s successful season.

“The fact that we were tied with just a minute to go shows that we have a really good program,” said Sam Miller, a UNCG professor.

The team is expected to return to campus around midnight Friday. Fans hope players return with their heads held high.

“I think it will get people to look up UNCG and say, ‘Let me look the school up and learn what it’s about’ and maybe think of, ‘I can apply here,’” said Vankendra Isaacs, a UNCG student.

“I think it was good for the whole city, for them to spotlight Greensboro,” said Buddy Austin, a Greensboro resident.
