Fiery tractor-trailer crash in Surry County (Daniel Markus -- WGHP)

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — A tractor-trailer crash closed Interstate 77 southbound in Surry County Friday morning.

All southbound lanes of Interstate 77 near mile marker 101 are closed after a tractor-trailer struck the rear cargo area of another tractor-trailer around 8:55 a.m.

The truck that was hit caught fire almost immediately. The driver was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and is expected to be OK.

Traffic is backed up into Virginia and can detour at I-74 east or on Highway 89.

A second crash happened at 9:20 a.m. on Interstate 77 northbound after several cars struck another vehicle. Two people were taken to a local hospital.

Traffic is expected to clear around 2 p.m. Friday.
