HIGH POINT, N.C. -- A woman is dead after High Point police say she was shot outside her home on Langford Avenue Tuesday afternoon, marking the sixth homicide in the city this year.

The victim was identified late Tuesday night by High Point police as 74-year-old Josie Lindsay.

Neighbors said they heard multiple gunshots go off at about 4:40 p.m.

Wendy Day, who lives across Green Drive, says this isn't the first time she's heard gunfire on Langford Avenue. Day described the neighborhood as tight-knit and said she's heartbroken that her friend and neighbor was killed.

High Point police say the shooting happened in the victim's front yard. Police Chief Kenneth Shultz said several people in the neighborhood were likely outside when the shooting happened and he is encouraging eyewitnesses to come forward to police.

"The way we're going to solve this is by having people come forward and give us information," he said. "That's paramount for us to get to the resolution on these. I've got two other open homicides right now in High Point for the year and the problem we've had on that is that people aren't coming forward to give us information. We're at big disadvantage when we don't know what's happening."
