YORK, S.C. — A 71-year-old South Carolina man who was decorating his home for Christmas was taken to the hospital after he was attacked by two of his neighbors’ dogs.

Buddy Owens was hanging decorations when the dogs attacked him from behind, according to WSOC. When police arrived, they were chasing after another neighbor, running into her door as she closed it behind her.

Eventually, police shot one dog and Animal Control officials seized the other.

“I just want them to know from the bottom of my heart, that I’m very sorry that this happened,” said neighbor Robert Miles. He was ticketed for violating the leash law.

Miles said the dogs, who belonged to him and a friend, somehow got outside the fence.

“At this point, it really does look like they got crazy and attacked him and they’re vicious dogs, and that’s not the case at all,” he said.

Miles says the attack was a freak accident.

Owens, who suffered severe injuries on his arm, had surgery Monday morning and is expected to be in the hospital for at least another week.
