GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A woman had died after a crash on northbound Interstate 85 in Guilford County Wednesday afternoon, according to Highway Patrol Master Trooper Chris Knox.

The accident was reported at 12:29 p.m. in the area on I-85 between U.S. 220 and South Elm-Eugene Street, Knox said.

According to Knox, a passenger vehicle traveling in the second to the left lane had some type of malfunction and the driver stopped in the travel lanes.

The driver exited her vehicle and was going to remove a passenger from the vehicle when the vehicle was struck by a work type van from behind that was unable to avoid the stopped vehicle.

The driver of the van exited his vehicle and was able to remove an elderly woman from the disabled vehicle prior to it being fully engulfed in flames.

The driver of the van was taken to Wesley Long Hospital with minor injuries, the driver of the disabled vehicle was uninjured and the passenger in the disabled passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at Moses Cone Hospital, Knox said.

Knox said the elderly woman was not from the Triad, but her identity is not being released until family members are notified.

Highway Patrol will be in contact with the Guilford County District Attorney’s Office about possible charges, Knox said.
