KING, N.C. — A 19-year-old man is accused of shooting and killing a 17-year-old male in King, according to King police.

Roger Dale Phillips III, of King, is accused of shooting and killing Chanler Aaron Gilham at an apartment complex on Saturday.

He had his first court appearance Monday morning where he was denied bond. Phillips told the court he shot Gilham in self-defense.

Neither family wanted to speak on camera with FOX8.

The shooting happened at about 4:15 p.m. at an Apartment on Pineview Drive. It was inside the apartment and there was one other witness present, according to King police.

The victim died of a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to police.

Police said the suspect and victim knew each other and there had been an ongoing dispute between them.

“There is evidence of illegal drug activity in the case, but at present we are withholding any further information concerning a possible motive in the shooting,” said King Police Chief Paula May in a prepared statement.

“Chanler Gilham was well liked by his peers and was a student at West Stokes High School in the process of transferring to Meadowbrook Academy in King,” May said.

Stokes County Schools spokeswoman said West Stokes’ principal, Kevin Spainhour, held a moment of silence at the start of school Monday and grief counselors were also brought in for students and staff.

Phillips, who does have pending charges on his record, is set to appear in court again on January 4th.

Funeral arrangements for Gilham are being made by family through Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home of Rural Hall, N.C.
