US service member killed in Syria on Thanksgiving

A United States service member was killed in northern Syria on Thursday, the Military Times reports.

It marks the first known American combat death there in an escalating campaign against ISIS.

The death was caused by an improvised explosive device near the town of Ayn Issa, according to the Defense Department.

The service member has not been identified, pending notification of his family, the report said.
