CARROLL COUNTY, Va. — A 92-year-old woman died in a brush fire on Friday, according to WDBJ.

The fire happened on Meadowbrook Road, outside Cana.

Family members told WDBJ that Anna May Thompson was out raking leaves when the fire started. Thompson died trying to stop the fire.

Thompson’s son was in a trailer near the fire. He is paralyzed from the waist down and family members said if the fire had gotten to the trailer he likely would not have made it out.

Thompson grew up a mile down the road from where the fire happened and had lived in the area her entire life, WDBJ reports.

The fire was extinguished at about 1 p.m. Friday. It is unclear what started the fire.
