What to do if you cut yourself in the kitchen

Chopping vegetables, slicing potatoes and carving the turkey -- cooking the holiday meal can actually be quite dangerous.

"Anytime there are festivities and people are in the kitchen getting things ready to go, you do tend to see a lot more slips of the knife or cuts on the edges of a sharp can," said Dr. Laura Murry, director of the urgent care division at Cone Hospital.

So, what do you do if you cut yourself in the kitchen?

First, you run water over the wound.

Then, you use a clean kitchen towel to apply firm pressure to stop the bleeding.

Dr. Murray says to make sure you keep that towel on the wound without removing it for at least 10 minutes.

If you can't get the bleeding to stop, she says it's best to head to the nearest Urgent Care or emergency department to see if you need stitches.

Stitches can help the wound heal faster and can in many cases prevent infection.

If you treat the wound at home, keep it covered, change the bandage at least twice a day and use an antibacterial cream.

With or without stitches, it takes the body about three weeks to heal a cut.
