INDIANAPOLIS -- A 4-year-old Indiana girl accidentally shot herself in the cheek and her mother in the head Sunday morning when she grabbed a gun from the nightstand.

"When officers arrived, they came into contact with the father of the 4-year-old who stated that he and his fiancé were asleep when he was awakened by the sound of the gunshot," the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a press release, according to IndyStar.

Police say the daughter shot herself in the face and the same bullet apparently hit her mother in the back of her head. The father and his 2-year-old son were also in the room when the accidental shooting occurred, but they were both uninjured.

The girl was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition. The mother is undergoing surgery but was conscious and alert when she left the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
