MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — A woman died after being struck by a vehicle while trying to cross U.S. 52 in Mount Airy Sunday night, according to the Mount Airy News.

The woman, identified as Cynthia Nicole Bryant, 19, of Sparta, was trying to cross U.S. 52 near Mayberry Mall at about 6 p.m. when the accident happened. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cody Epperson, 20, of Mount Airy, was with Bryant at the time of the accident and was also struck by the vehicle, the newspaper reports. Epperson was taken to a Winston-Salem hospital with a pelvis injury.

“They actually ran across the highway,” Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton told the Mount Airy News.

The driver of the vehicle — a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser — that struck the couple was not injured.

No charges have been filed and an investigation is underway.
