ASHEBORO, N.C. -- Cubs fans in the Piedmont are celebrating the World Series win Chicago-style.

Mike’s Chicago Dogs is a restaurant in Asheboro. Today, the space held a hot dog eating contest so that fans could relish the World Series moment.

Joel Leonard organized the event.

“People thought Cubs fans were fools and idiots,” Leonard said. “Why would you root for a team that loses every year? They kept on thinking they could win and they finally did it.”

The Cubs championship was especially significant to the restaurant owner, Mike Jones. Last night, Jones was not only able to experience the win, he also celebrated his birthday.

"I turned 62 yesterday,” Jones said. “It was the most amazing experience to see what happened yesterday, happen.”

For many fans, watching the game was agonizing.

“I literally felt my heart fall out it was such a close game,” said Justin Snyder, a local Cubs fan.

The Cubs won in extra innings and against many odds. No team has come back from a 3-1 deficit in the series since 1985.
