Brian Lee Adams, 56

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. — A Florida man is facing more than a decade in prison after he buried his mother in the backyard of her home to collect her benefits.

Adams pleaded guilty to theft of government property and aggravated identity theft. He faces a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison, with a two-year sentence for the identity theft charge.

PEOPLE reports 56-year-old Brian Lee Adams’ mother died of natural causes in July 2014, and instead of reporting the death, he buried her in the backyard to collect more than $35,000 in benefits owed to her. Officials say he collected her Social Security and pension payments each month.

His sentencing date has not been set and his mother’s death investigation continue.
