Photos: Several people hit by car in Martinsville Speedway parking lot

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Several people were taken to a hospital after being hit by a car Sunday afternoon in a parking lot at Martinsville Speedway.

WSET reported that there are no known fatalities, but several people have been taken to Martinsville Memorial Hospital.

Police said the driver has been taken into custody. The driver’s name has not been released.

The incident happened about 30 minutes after the race when the driver jumped the traffic line and ran into fans, according to, citing bystanders.

Jimmie Johnson had won the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 prior to the incident.

Martinsville Speedway released the following statement on Sunday night:

“A vehicular incident occurred following Sunday’s NASCAR race in the Martinsville Speedway parking lot. Multiple individuals were struck by a vehicle, and the driver has been taken into police custody. Several people were treated on-site by emergency workers in the infield care center while others have been transported to a nearby hospital. We will monitor the situation closely with local authorities, and work with them to provide updates.”

No other details were immediately available.
