WEDGEFIELD, S.C. — A South Carolina man is facing charges after deputies say he stabbed another man during a Sunday School service.

Billy Lewis, 65, is charged with attempted murder after the incident, according to WIS.

Deputies responded to a stabbing call at the church around 9:23 a.m. and discovered that Lewis was sitting behind the victim during Sunday School when he stood up and began stabbing the victim with a 6-inch knife. He suffered severe injuries but is reportedly in stable condition.

“This is certainly a tragic event,” said Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis. “As bad as it was, we are fortunate it was not worse. Our thoughts and prayers go out the church members as well as the victim and his family and the suspect.”

Deputies say Lewis was a church regular and is believed to suffer from a mental disability.
