11-year-old girl struck by vehicle in Winston-Salem dies from injuries

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A child has died from their injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Winston-Salem on Thursday afternoon, according to Winston-Salem police.

The accident happened near the intersection of Shattalon Drive and Murray Road at about 4 p.m.

Winston-Salem police said 11-year-old Aaliyah Rivera stepped into the path of a 2001 Honda Odyssey minivan that was traveling eastbound on Shattalon Drive.

The driver of the minivan was unable to stop and struck the child.

The child was taken to a local hospital where she later died from injuries sustained.

The driver of the minivan was not injured.

The Winston-Salem Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing the investigation into the collision.

This is the 18th traffic fatality in Winston-Salem in 2016, compared to 20 at this time in 2015, police said.
