HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. — Two Mississippi police officers are on paid leave after the 3-year-old daughter of one of them was left alone in a patrol car and died.

Long Beach Police Officer Cassie Barker’s daughter Cheyenn Hyer passed away Friday after she was left in the car for four hours, according to the Sun Herald. Officials say Barker was visiting fellow patrolman Clark Ladner while the child was in the vehicle.

The car was running and air conditioning was on when investigation arrived at the scene, but temperatures on Friday were in the high 80s, with a heat index above 100 degrees. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“I’ve spoken with the male officer involved, but I’ve not spoken with the female officer, not as far as the official internal investigation, because of medical reasons,” said Long Beach Chief Wayne McDowell. “The mother is in shock. I will talk to her soon.”

Both Barker and Ladner were placed on paid administrative leave.
