EDEN, N.C. – A Summerfield man faces charges after an Eden police officer was hit by a four-wheeler, causing the officer to shoot himself in the leg.

Joseph Robert Williams, 21, faces one count of misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, according to Eden police.

It happened after Eden police responded to Harris Point Apartments at 345 E. Harris Place at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in reference to a noise complaint.

Police said a group of people on four-wheelers fled the scene and into a wooded area between Harris Point Apartments and Oak Hills Golf Course.

While fleeing, one of the four wheelers struck Sergeant Mayes, causing the officer to shoot himself in the leg. The officer was taken to Moses Cone Hospital with a non-life threating injury.

Williams was jailed under a $10,000 unsecured bond and has court planned for November 8.
