Winston-Salem man helps police nab armed robbery suspects after following their vehicle

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man helped police nab two armed robbery suspects after he followed their vehicle.

Officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department responded to the 2600 block of Toddler Place Drive Monday afternoon to investigate a report of a person being robbed at gunpoint.  A male suspect left the area in a silver sports utility vehicle.

Immediately after being robbed, Deonte Blue, 19, called the police department to report the robbery and that he was following the suspect vehicle.

Based on the information provided by Blue, officers located the vehicle traveling west on East 14th Street.  Officers conducted a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle in the 1500 block of North Cleveland Avenue.  Subsequently, the two men were taken into custody without incident and charged in connection with the armed robbery.

Deland Gray Hawkins, 25, of 4116 Oak Ridge Dr., and Stephen Kerry Cowan, 19, of 5306 Oak Ridge Dr., were arrested.
