FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- A North Carolina teacher was placed on paid administrative leave after he stomped on the American flag during a First Amendment lesson.

WNCN reports Lee Francis, a history teacher at Massey Hill Classical High School in Fayetteville, stomped on the flag to exhibit freedom of speech.

“I put it on the ground and I used my right foot and I took two steps on it, and immediately two kids get out of the room,” Francis said.

Francis was placed on leave Tuesday and is scheduled to meet with Cumberland County School system officials on Thursday, according to the Fayetteville Observer.

“Clearly, there are other ways to teach First Amendment rights without desecrating the flag,” Cumberland County Schools Superintendent Frank Till said in a statement.

Francis has received backlash on social media and in-person.
