GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A North Carolina couple was found passed out in a vehicle from an apparent drug overdose with their 3-year-old child in the car.

Steven Britt McCullen, 27, of Fremont, and Christine Danielle McCullen, 26, of Pikeville, are each charged with possession of a schedule I drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and child abuse, according to a Goldsboro Police Department news release. Steven McCullen was also charged with DWI.

On Monday shortly after 7 a.m. Goldsboro police officers responded to the McDonald’s at 2002 Wayne Memorial Drive on a report of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot.

Upon arrival, officers found the couple passed out in their vehicle from an apparent heroin overdose, the release said.

Officers also found multiple packets of suspected heroin — some opened and some unopened, the release said. There were also several syringes located along with the suspected drugs.

The couple had their 3-year-old child in the car and the child was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital to be evaluated, the release said. Social Services took custody of the child. The child had no injuries.

Both suspects were placed in the Wayne County Jail. Steven McCullen received a $12,000 secured bond and Christine McCullen received a $10,000 secured bond.

Both suspects had their first court appearance on Tuesday.
