TAMPA BAY, Fla. — A Florida man is dead after he was shot by his cousin while they were testing to see if a bulletproof vest worked, according to WFLA.

Joaquin Mendez, 23, reportedly put the vest on at about 10 p.m. on Saturday and officers responded several minutes after the shooting. When they arrived, police found Mendez suffering from a gunshot wound.

Alexandro Garibaldi, 24, initially told officers he heard a gunshot and found his cousin on the ground, but witnesses say Mendez put the vest on and wondered out loud whether the vest still worked before  Garibaldi took out a handgun and said, “let’s see.”

Mendez was taken to a hospital and died from his injuries.

He was charged with manslaughter with a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.
