Suspect arrested in Mebane fatal hit-and-run

MEBANE, N.C. — Mebane police have arrested a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run that happened last weekend, according to Assistant Chief Thomas Byrd.

Barbara Bigelow Wyatt, 77, of Greensboro, turned herself into authorities around 10 p.m. on Friday. Authorities said she was served with the outstanding warrants and taken before a Magistrate.

Wyatt was wanted for felony hit-and-run, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle without financial responsibility, Byrd said in a news release Saturday.

Wyatt was placed in the Alamance County Jail in lieu of a $250,000 secured bond, her first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

The crash happened shortly before 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Christopher Scott Askey, 23, was crossing the roadway in a crosswalk when he was struck. The suspect vehicle fled the scene.

A prayer vigil for Askey is planned for Sunday, September 11th at the corner of Center Street and N. 3rd Street in Mebane.
