MOUNT AIRY, N.C. -- Andy Griffith may be Mount Airy's favorite son, but today the town celebrated a big birthday for its favorite daughter, actress Betty Lynn.

A resident of the fictional town of Mayberry for the last 50 years, Thelma Lou -- as she was known -- was sort of adopted by the town 10 years ago when she moved to Mount Airy.

She turned 90 today and her many fans helped her celebrate her birthday and long successful career.

The celebration continued Monday evening at the Earle Theater with a showing of her 1948 film "June Bride," which also starred Betty Davis, and was the onscreen debut for Debbie Reynolds.
