BECKLEY, W.Va. — An inmate who escaped from a work crew in Wilkes County has been captured, according to a news release from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

North Carolina prison officials received word Wednesday that Jason Strickland is in custody in West Virginia, the release said.

Strickland was arrested after he checked into a homeless shelter in Beckley.

Strickland escaped by leaving a highway work crew in Wilkes County on July 27. That day he was picked up by a woman driving an SUV.

Several days later, Strickland was spotted in Galax, Virginia, but there had been no leads since.

Preparations are being made to extradite Strickland back to North Carolina.
