RALEIGH, N.C. — Two North Carolina teenagers have been arrested and charged with torturing, beating and drowning a dog.

Khai Daugherty and Annaliese Peterson, both 19, are facing animal cruelty charges after they allegedly killed their dog by drowning it in their apartment complex’s pool, according to WNCN.

Peterson says the dog drowned at the pool on Aug. 18 and they were attempting to resuscitate it by performing CPR. The CPR is why the dog looked as if it had been beaten.

“I pop out of the water and that dog is on the ground, and [Daugherty] is trying to get him to breathe,” Peterson said, according to WNCN. “I’m screaming ‘What’s going on?’ and he said the dog had drowned.”

Peterson bonded out of jail but Daugherty is still being held at the Wake County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.

They were both charged with one felony count of cruelty to animals.
