BURLINGTON, N.C. -- A dog that ran away after being in a car accident has been found safe and reunited with it's owner.

"The EMTs wanted to take me to the hospital," said Amy Robertson following the accident last Saturday morning. "I said no, I got to find my dog."

Robertson's search for MJ, a 4-year-old black Lab, spread community-wide thanks to neighbors, resulted in more than 50 signs and police searching and sharing the search on the department's Facebook page.

"He's just a sweet, loving, tender dog," said Robertson. "I have loved that dog ever since I got him."

After several days, 13-year-old Spencer Hood spotted MJ in his backyard, about a half a mile from where the dog first went missing.

"I don't want to see an animal by itself," said Hood. "When a dog has been missing for four days, that's not used to being outside and probably was a little scared, I don't want to see that in an animal."

Hood, along with Robertson's adult son, was able to get MJ home.

"I was very emotional," said Robertson. "I'd been emotional all week long because that dog means so much to me."

MJ was found safe, though he had gained about four pounds during his time away from home.
