FORT MYERS, Fla. — A Florida man drowned Sunday after saving his wife from a rip current.

Kendra Smith and Sherrod Whittington, 34, were visiting the beach when the current pulled them both under, according to the Miami Herald.

“He was able to help her, but he just wasn’t able to get out,” said Miami Beach Fire Rescue Capt. Charlton Price.

Whittington was taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead soon after his arrival.

There was a red flag warning at the time incident.
