GREENSBORO, N.C. -- In her summer travels, a bottle of apple cider vinegar is almost as much a must-have for Carla Rowland as her swimsuit.
"I pack it in my bag," Rowland laughs. "It has helped me drop about seven pounds of stubborn weight without changing anything else I was doing. I feel great. I just love it. A tablespoon three times a day diluted with filtered alkaline water."
Health food enthusiasts snap up a bottle of apple cider vinegar about every 10 minutes at Greensboro's House of Health. Fans of it say it helps with all kinds of health ailments, from digestions issues, skin problems, a weakened immune system and more.
But what about the science behind the sour stuff?
"The research on it is very thin. I hear from my patients about it, but most of the studies on what it does are based on rats, not humans," said Novant Health's Dr. Sloan Manning. "That being said, if a patients feels it is helpful to him or her, by all means. I don't think a tablespoon twice a day will do any harm. I just wish my patients would then go walk for 30 minutes along with the apple cider vinegar."
