FLATBUSH, N.Y. — A New York man was shot and killed when he tried to help his 17-year-old son get his stolen hat back, the Daily News reports.

The son was reportedly playing basketball when another teen stole his Oakland Raiders hat Saturday night. The 17-year-old was playing basketball at the same court Wednesday night when he saw the person who stole his hat and told his father.

His dad went up to the thief and took the hat, before walking away.

As they were leaving, the thief and two of his friends followed them and opened fired, shooting 38-year-old Gerald Cummings in the head and back. The son was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
