SUMMERFIELD, N.C. — A Summerfield man died Tuesday after he fell off his tractor and was run over by the attached mower.

The incident happened at about 7:45 p.m. on Wrights Farm Lane, Guilford Emergency Management Shift Manager L. Lambeth said. A man was trapped under a Bush Hog, Lambeth said.

The man, Hubert Wayne Byrd, apparently didn’t come home in timely manner so someone went looking for him and found him.

Byrd, 76, was the former sheriff of Hoke County. Byrd held the office in the 1990s.

No foul play is suspected and the incident was classified as farm/industrial accident.
