WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A single candle burns on the front step of 3615 Hemlock Drive in Winston-Salem. Passing by, it's hard to miss the six bullet holes clearly in the front window.
When one of the home's residents returned from vacation Sunday afternoon, he noticed them and called police.
When officers arrived, that's when Winston-Salem police say they found the body of 66-year-old Walter Lee Odom inside. Neighbors said Odom lived at the Hemlock Drive house.
"That's a big shock," said neighbor Michael Banner. "It really is."
Police said their investigation determined the shooting likely happened between 2 a.m. and 11 p.m. Saturday. Neighbors said they didn't hear any gunshots.
"Goes to show that it could happen to anybody," Banner said. "I didn't hear anything. Nobody else around here heard anything. It's terrible. A person who, as far as I knew, he didn't bother anybody."
