Steve Teglas – better known as “Steve the Food Guy” is amazed at how much the nutritional program #thenext56days has grown.
Four years ago, Teglas started #thenext56days, an eight-week course, to help people maintain blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, detox, and release fat through eating holistic foods.
The program’s popularity has expanded from Thomasville to other states, including Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Now, more Piedmont restaurants and eateries are creating menus that coincide with the program.
“They're having people come in saying do you have something that's 56 approved,” Teglas said.
Wallburg Emporium and Coffee, along with Get It To Go Bakery and Country Store, are two businesses that offer “56 approved” items.
Get It To Go Bakery has made desserts including pink lemonade cupcakes and says customers ask for the items often.
“Now, it's every day. They’re starting to get the word out and there’s so many people that are changing their lifestyle with this and we're glad that we can support that,” said co-owner Sherri Bogue.
By fall, it’s estimated 25 restaurants will have food options that are on the program.
It’s estimated that since it began, more than 10,000 people have participated in #thenext56days plan.
To help with the growth, former participants are now becoming coaches to teach others.
Lynn Frank has lost more than 51 pounds since January and is currently teaching in Lexington.
“It’s incredible. We just want it to grow. We want to help everybody that we can,” she said.
Pamela Thornberry is also a participant who has since become a coach. She teaches in Jamestown.
“It's fun to get people involved to help them understand what you can eat and how much food you can eat and eat healthy,” she said.
“It has become a mission for a lot of people and I think it's really neat,” Teglas said.
Teglas says by fall, #thenext56days will be in eight other states.
People have also started participating in Canada, Mexico, and Australia.
