JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Florida mother died Sunday afternoon after trying to save her son from rip currents, CBS 47 reports.

Upon rescue crew’s arrival to Huguenot Park, authorities found 45-year-old Penny Guy-Smith lying face down on a boogie board – her child holding on.

“The current can get anyone, experienced or non-experienced. Great shape or not. Mother Nature controls what happens in the water,” said Brian Stafford, supervisor for Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department Ocean Rescue, according to CBS 47.

The investigation is ongoing and the official cause of death has yet to be released.
