North Carolina discount store closes after reported rat infestation
WILSON, N.C. – A discount store in North Carolina has closed after evidence surfaced that it may have been infested with rats.
The Wilson Times reported that customers were turned away from a Dollar Tree in Wilson earlier this week after the store closed.
Two signs were on the door, saying that the business was closed due to “technical issues.”
A customer had reportedly complained and state authorities began investigating earlier this month.
“Inspectors noted evidence of a rodent infestation with suspected urine, excrement and nesting materials,” said Heather Overton, public information officer for the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, according to the paper.
Overton said the investigation is ongoing and the store will not reopen until the problem is fixed. Details about the extent of the problem have not been released.
“The store management is cooperating and working to get the issues handled,” Overton told the paper.
It’s not the first time rats have been found in a North Carolina discount store. A Family Dollar in Charlotte closed last month for the same reason, according to WCNC.
