CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C. – A North Carolina man drowned in a lake after saving two children who had fallen into the water.

WSPA reported that 19-year-old Preston Johnston of Spindale died after the incident Friday evening at Lake Lure near the Rocky Broad River at Chimney Rock.

Johnston and four children decided to go to a rock in the middle of the lake, according to WSPA.

Two children were having problems in the water and Johnson went in to get them, according to authorities.

Officials said Johnson went under the water and never came up. A dive team found his body at about 8 p.m. Friday, around two hours after the incident was reported.

The two children, believed to be about 12 years old, are expected to be fine.
