BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Lee Gatewood lives at one of two apartments sprayed by bullets during a shootout in the parking lot of Oak Pointe Apartments Tuesday afternoon.

Burlington police say at least two to three people starting shooting at each other just before 2 p.m.

Luckily, Gatewood wasn't home at the time.

"They just messed my door up real bad and as you can tell, I've got one at the side of my railing right there," Gatewood said, pointing at the bullet holes.

The apartment on the first floor was hit even worse in the crossfire.

Bullets tore through a bedroom door and a mattress.

Police say no one was hurt.

Dorthia Farmer was at home with her two children when the shots rang out.

"It just sounded like a lot of firecrackers," Farmer said. "Pow, pow, pow, pow, then it went on again, like 10 more shots."

Even though her apartment wasn't hit, Farmer says she's afraid to let her children outside.

"Now I'm in fear for the well-being of my children and myself as well," Farmer said.

One man told FOX8's Sarah Krueger he was sitting feet away from where the bullets came through his bedroom. He said he will not be sleeping in his apartment tonight, and plans to move.

Police say the suspects drove off in three separate vehicles: a white BMW, a gold-colored SUV and a white Ford Fusion.

Police say there have been more than 50 shooting incidents in Burlington since January.
