ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. – An 11-year-old boy was bit by a shark while surfing off the coast of North Carolina.

WNCT reported that the victim was bitten at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday as he surfed west of Fort Macon State Park at Atlantic Beach.

The boy suffered severe wounds on his foot and was taken to Carteret Health Care with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Atlantic Beach Fire Captain Casey Arthur. He is currently recovering.

The incident marks the second time this month that a shark bite has been reported at Atlantic Beach. A small shark bit an 18-year-old man on June 11 while he was swimming, causing deep wounds to his hand.

The beach is expected to remain open.
