Police charge man with DWI after overnight crash in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM — The Winston-Salem Police Department has charged a man with driving while impaired after he hit another car head-on while driving the wrong way near Broad Street overnight.

Police say that Steven Paul Haam, 36, was traveling west on U.S. 421 and in the wrong direction when he collided with a car driven by 30-year-old Joe Jimenez De los Santos.

Both Haam and De los Santos sustained injuries and were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Three other people inside the vehicle with De los Santos were also taken to the hospital and their names have not been released.

Haam was cited with a DWI and has additional charges that are pending.

The investigation is ongoing.
