BURLINGTON, N.C. -- At first glance, you'd think she's a teenager knocking out pull-up after pull-up at Kai Jax Gym in Gibsonville.

"I never liked to sweat. When I started to feel myself getting sweaty,  I'd feel gross and be like, 'oh, I can't handle this,'" laughs Tina Smiley.

For most of her mom years, she spent much of her time, as many moms do, cleaning.

"I literally would say that you could set up a plate and eat off my floor. It was that spotless. It was ridiculous, but it was just my mindset. I was constantly cleaning and dusting, like every day," remembers the 47-year-old  Smiley. "I wouldn't go to bed until midnight after everybody else went to bed, it was nuts."

But one day, she had a revelation: her boys didn't care all that much about a spotless house.

So her friend, who had recently started running, encouraged Tina to give it a try.

"The first time I got around the track at Springwood, I was just like, 'yes!'," she said. "I just started from there, working out, growing in confidence. I feel better now than I ever did in my younger years."

Smiley does lighter weights and a lot of reps while also encouraging other moms to not feel bad about taking the time to work out. "the only way you can really take care of anyone else is if you take care of yourself first."
