WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A second suspect has been arrested in connection with an assault on a Winston-Salem officer and a chase Monday afternoon.

Devonte Leon Hall, 24, was arrested by members of the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force in Kernersville on Friday, according to a news release from Winston-Salem police.

Hall is charged with misdemeanor assault on a government official, resisting arrest and careless and reckless driving. He was also served with an order for arrest for a felony probation violation.

At 4:21 p.m. Monday, Officer J.R. Mitchell, with Winston-Salem police, conducted a vehicle stop on a 2006 Kia Optima on U.S. 52 South at U.S. 421 for various registration and insurance violations.

During the vehicle stop, Mitchell detected an odor of illegal drugs coming from the passenger area of the vehicle.

Mitchell attempted to get the passenger out of the vehicle but the passenger resisted and a struggle ensued.

During the struggle, with Mitchell partially inside the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle began to pull away.

Mitchell was pulled along with the vehicle for a short distance, his foot was run over by the rear tire of the vehicle and he was thrown away from the vehicle onto his back along the roadside, a news release from Winston-Salem police said. Mitchell had minor scrapes and bruises that did not require medical attention.

After the incident, Mitchell called for backup and proceeded to pursue the suspect vehicle in his patrol vehicle.

Mitchell located the suspect vehicle traveling south on U.S. 52 near the Waughtown Street exit and attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect vehicle would not stop.

The pursuit traveled off of U.S. 52 onto Waughtown Street to Thomasville Road and then to Sprague Street.

The suspect vehicle stopped in the 1400 block of East Sprague Street. The passenger exited the vehicle and fled the area on foot. A K-9 track was conducted but was unsuccessful.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 22-year-old Cheyenne Levette Thomas, of Winston-Salem, was taken into custody without further incident.

Thomas was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, multiple driving violations and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Thomas was given a $10,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 7.

Hall was given a $9,000 bond for the Monday incident but will be held without bond for the probation violation until his first court appearance on June 27.
