IRON STATION, N.C. — A Lincoln County firefighter has died after exercising while on duty, WBTV reports.

Joshua Warren, 34, had just returned from a medical call when he took part in a physical fitness training at East Lincoln Middle School, officials said. He was jogging around 11 a.m. when he collapsed. He was rushed to CHS-Lincoln Medical Center where he later passed away.

Warren had been active in the East Lincoln Fire Department since 2013. He also worked part-time as a firefighter for both the Alexis Fire Department and Lucia-Riverbend Fire Department.

“Warren was a dedicated firefighter and very active in the organization and his church,” officials said during a press conference Thursday evening. “He will be greatly missed.”

Officials say a full investigation into Warren’s death will be conducted. He leaves behind two children, an 8-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son.
