CLEMMONS, N.C. -- So many kids come through the doors at the Clemmons' YMCA and so many of them can't swim.

"It's really alarming. There's a lot of kids that can't swim or who are just completely afraid," said Sandy Thomerson, aquatics director at the YMCA. "That's why we're just so excited about this new grant."

The new grant allows the YMCA to offer free swimming lessons for kids ages 5 to 12 in a program called "Safe Around The Water."

"Michael Phelps in the Olympics is great, but if kids don't even feel comfortable around the water, that's another issue altogether. We teach them how to save themselves by floating, how to turn on their backs, how to not handle not panicking, what to do if a friend falls in the water," said Thomerson.
