GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Investigators with the North Carolina Highway Patrol are charging a Greensboro woman after she crashed her car into a tractor-trailer, causing her to get stuck underneath it.

Master Trooper Chris Knox says 25-year-old Whitney Fields fell asleep behind the wheel while driving home from work. Fields is facing charges for reckless driving and for a driver’s license violation.

The crash took place on Interstate 85 North, just south of Kivett Drive, near mile marker 116. NCSHP responded to the incident at 3:54 a.m.

Investigators say the driver of the tractor-trailer didn’t know a car got wedged underneath his truck until he noticed sparks flying from the ground. Knox says the tractor-trailer driver drove about a quarter of a mile with the car underneath him before realizing something was wrong. The tractor-trailer driver, a 64-year-old Durham man, will face no charges.

Both drivers had minor injuries.
