PHOENIX — An armed suspect who was yelling profanities and “frothing at the mouth” is dead in an early-morning officer-involved shooting in Phoenix.

Wednesday’s shooting was confirmed by Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump.

“We believe we had three to four officers who fired at the suspect, Crump said.

He described it as “a volley of gunfire.”

One witness said he heard about seven shots fired in a shopping center parking lot at 2020 N. 75th Ave. at 12:30 a.m.

Police later said the suspect fired six shots at officers.

No officers were hurt.

Crump said a witness saw the suspect climb out of a car he left running. The man was armed with a handgun, the witness said.

The witness described the suspect as “frothing at the mouth” and banging on doors of businesses at the shopping center.

“Some very bizarre behavior,” Crump said.

Phoenix firefighters and paramedics arrived and brought the witness to a secure location.

“The subject was concealed, whether on purpose or not, behind a pillar at a store,” Crump said.

Police opened fire and shot the man dead.

The victim has been tentatively identified but police are withholding his name until family and relatives have been informed.

“From the time officers arrived on the scene we probably taking somewhere between 3 to 4 minutes before it’s finished,” Crump said.

Most of the police activity was concentrated in front of a Dollar Tree store.

“Fire department actually arrived first as some sort of ‘check welfare call’ on the individual,” Crump said.

Police set up two mobile command centers equipped with tools needed for the investigation.
