KING, N.C. -- Robert Smith Jr., of Walnut Cove, often shares his birthday with Memorial Day. Monday he celebrated his 94th with family in King.
Though it’s a time to celebrate, he also reflects on his own service in World War II.
“I've lost a few friends in service, got some good memories and some bad memories about being in there,” Smith said. “I think it made me a little more conscious of my fellow people.”
His term began on Sept. 29, 1942, and ended Dec. 5, 1945.
Smith was assigned to the 337th Company as a sergeant of the military police. While overseas he earned four medals.
“I don't regret anything that I had to do. I happily served my term in the service,” Smith said.
Smith is the proud father of four children, 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Walnut Cove.
