GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Deputy T. Clapp with the Guilford County Sheriff's Office said that criminals are less likely to be in a neighborhood when there’s a patrol vehicle around.

He’s working this Memorial Day weekend and expects to be performing several vacation checks of residents’ homes.

Requesting a vacation check takes a simple phone call to the sheriff's office or your particular district’s office.

“You can call any district offices and give them your name, your address, give them your telephone number where you can be reached and the dates you’ll be leaving and coming back,” Clapp said. “We stop outside the house and actually walk around the house, check the property and make sure everything is still locked and the windows are still secure.”
